#LookingBack: In 1998, The Oxford Trust – through Science Oxford – became the regional co-ordinators for the Nuffield Science Bursary Scheme. This initiative gave Year 12 students the opportunity to spend their summer immersed in real research environments, from University labs to cutting-edge tech companies. One of those students was Alex Greenhalgh….who took his first steps into research through the scheme. This early hands-on experience sparked a passion. It was his first experience of working in a lab and gave him valuable insight into future in research and sparked a passion that would shape his future. #LookingForward: Fast forward to today and we are proud that Alex is co-founder of award-winning Spintex, one of the companies based in our Wood Centre For Innovation in Headington. Spintex is using a spider-inspired spinning process to develop the next generation of bio-based, high-performance silk for fashion, defence and medicine with a fraction of the environmental impact of traditional processes. 🎉Here’s to celebrating 40 years of The Oxford Trust and “encouraging the pursuit of science” #OxfordTrust40 #innovation #Oxford #StartedinOxford #ScienceCareers

Great Lives - what do The Oxford Trust's founders Sir Martin and Audrey (Lady) Wood have in common with Raymond Blanc? A mentor who was at the forefront of both low temperature physics (superconductivity) and food (molecular gastronomy) - Professor Nicholas Kurti. His influence and towering intellect, alongside that rare gift of being able to communicate science easily, directly lead to the Wood's development of superconducting magnets, magnetic resonance imaging, the formation of Oxford Instruments plc and also the extraordinary talents of chef Blanc on show at Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons, A Belmond Hotel and TV where science meets cooking well before many had realised that cookery is more physics than magic and instinct.
